It’s a rather hot debate as to whether to keep your windows closed or open when the weather outside is hot if you want to remain cool indoors. There’s logic in both sides of the argument, but which is right?
We at KLG Rutland are true experts in windows and glazing products in general, having provided them to the good people of the East Midlands for over a half a century. As such, we have decided to get to the bottom of the windows open or closed in warm weather debate to help everyone remain at a comfortable temperature in their home.
So, without further ado…
Should You Open Windows On A Hot Day?
As with all good debates, it depends. If the sun is blazing outside, you should absolutely close the windows and the blinds. If it’s the early morning or evening and the sun isn’t at its hottest, opening the windows and allowing fresh air in is a good idea. One golden rule to live by is that if it’s warmer outside than inside, keep the windows closed, but if it’s warmer inside than outside, get them open.
Let’s look at how this advice works in practice…
When You Should Open Your Windows On A Hot Day
As we have alluded to, there are times when it is better to open your windows on a warm day. For instance, if there is a good breeze outside which would bring cooling air into your home, then it’s a good idea to get windows open on the side of the house that the wind is blowing into. This will circulate the air better, which should cool your home. Similarly, early mornings when the sun is just rising or late evenings when the sun has gone down also offer a chance to open windows and let fresh air in. On top of that, you may also consider opening windows if the air outside is less humid than it is indoors, and keeping your blinds or curtains closed while doing so will help prevent heat gain by blocking direct sunlight.
When You Should Close Your Windows On A Hot Day
For the most part, you should keep your windows closed on a hot day, especially when the sun is high in the sky and not blocked by any cloud cover. Additionally, you will want to close any blinds or curtains in your windows in order to prevent direct sunlight entering your property and heating the temperature inside. Humidity is also a factor here and it’s important to ensure that whenever outside humidity is high your windows are closed to prevent that humidity penetrating your home, bringing in moisture and forming mould in the long run. On a hot day, use technology like fans and air conditioning to cool your home rather than opening windows for extended periods of time and you will feel more comfortable. Remember, if it’s hotter outside than inside, keep those windows closed!
Hopefully by reading this guide you will be in a better position to keep your home cool even on the hottest of days, opening your windows only when appropriate and keeping them closed when in the sun.
